Scarred Nation

Thoughts 2:

When a person dehumanizes another on the basis of his or her religion, caste, nationality,  gender or sexual orientation, the act of violence first happens in his or her thought, it manifests in the language used and finally leaves a mark of it's intentions on a body. The wounds heal, but scars always remain as an indelible mark of shame and disgrace. A forward-looking civilization should stop this vicious cycle not only at it's consequence but at it's very roots.

The tragedy of the tangerines

Short fiction 10:

They said they'll bring back the glorious days of the past. That ancient legacy of this great civilization. He was told that they will save his religion from the jaws of secularism. That he can now wear his identity in his sleeve. The fear of his fellow others forced him to vote for vigilantes. Voting in favor of them was his dharm, they nudged. He never knew that he was opening a Pandora's box. The EVMs invoked the demons of history that has come back to haunt his nation again. Like a true bhakt he felt whatever unfolded thereafter was meant to happen in the name of Ram. Hatred was sowed in the barren lands of democracy. Times passed by.

Nothing improved his farm income for years now. Although there has been a good crop of tangerines in Nagpur this time. He thought the color of his future would be orange. It's been four years since his son graduated. He couldn't fetch a job. His son had a bad temperament which reminded him of his youth. He always advised him to remain calm. Interests accrued upon his student loan and the family was caught in a debt trap. The bank officers made a frequent visit to warn them. He looked up and asked his God if he's been tested. He lost hope of the promises that were made to him. He knew he got his religion back, but in the sanctum sanctorum of his heart, there was no God. He felt empty and sad.

The dissonance was disrupted by a deadening noise of a door knock. He felt anxious who was knocking at his door at 2 AM in the morning. His wife went to open the door. He was perplexed to see cops at home. They said they've come to investigate his son over a lynching case. He could already smell something bad. He sweated inside realizing he's encountering the devil at his doorstep. His son was taken into custody. He could see his world collapse in front of him.

'If we brought this upon us, then it's upto us to unmake it', his wife said in a firm voice.

The Confluence

Flash Fiction 9:

They feared losing their sovereignty over their selves. He doesn't want her to want him. Neither does she want him to desire her. Still they both secretly wanted to be with each other. The stream of love gradually gushed into their nerves. This tension kept them both away yet closer. The mental conflict was unbearable. Running apart from one another only made it worse. They decided to face it that day, after all they're colleagues and have spoken before. They saw each other in their office canteen. He said hi, she smiled. They could hear their hearts beat swifter than usual. Their spirits danced inside. The situation was both delicate and overwhelming. They looked off each other to calm their nerves. It was crazy. Once they had put their guards down, the floodgates of desire went unfastened.  Nothing after that could stop those streams from coming together.

The Pursuit of Love

'You'd feel the divine one day', he could hear Fr. David's voice as Prof.Vasudev left the church. 'Sure, I am looking forward to!', he responded. Both were batchmates during their college days. Vasudev is agnostic and likes to live life in modesty. Anything extra makes him cringe. He advises his students the same. 'Practice austerity', he often tells.

As he entered the college that day, Prof Vasudev felt something peculiar as he saw his peers gossip in hushed tone. Although, he doesn't expect anything better from his chatterbox colleagues he wants to know what is scandalizing the day.

Later that day, Fr David was talking to two students and their family members in his room. He seemed perplexed and agitated. Vasudev remembers both the boy and the girl since they took one of his classes together last year. He understood that it's about their relationship. Their parents have come from distant lands to take them back. He could hear an infant crying and wondered what's happening. David narrated him the story. That both were living in together and chose to bear a child. Since they were not attending college regularly, none of them knew about it. Distaste due to arguments and intolerance due to hatred have replaced romance. The girl child is now as unrequited as the love they shared with each other. Father asked the families to leave the child with him as they both refused to take responsibility for the baby.

Prof Vasu couldn't control but smile at the little wonder he saw in front of him. He was a loner all his life. He knew how it feels to be left alone. After his wife's untimely demise, he wasn't ready to marry again. But there was something about the girl child that urged him to ask David if he could adopt the new born. Father David refused firmly and gave him the card of the counselor he always wanted him to meet. He took it hesitantly but understood why he insists. 'Atleast, believe in love' David shouted as Vasu left. 'I'll try', David could hear Vasu's voice echo over his shoulders.

'Dr. Sherin? Hi. I'm Prof Vasu!'
'Hello! Fr David said you'd come. Please have a seat.'
'Thank you.'
'Loneliness and depression can affect anyone and it is understandable given our times' she comforted. Prof Vasu smiled and replied, 'I agree. But....'
'Do you also find issues with sleep?' she enquired.
'No... But...'
'Tell me Mr Vasu, why won't you marry again?
'Exactly... Will you?'
'Pardon? I didn't get you'
'Would you like to marry me?'
'Listen... I'm a counselor... I treat patients'
'I know... But I'm not one. I knew about you through Father David who is also my friend.'
'But you know nothing about me.. Why would you want to marry me'
'Yes.. Nothing, except that you lost your beloved family during the Gujarat riots. You were in trauma and shock for years.  So much so, you chose to remain single forever. We deserve love, Sherin. And it has arrived. '
'I can't marry you for the child you want to adopt'
'Sorry, to me it looks the child is adopting us. Without her, what hope do we have for our deserted lives? The child gives me hope, a new lease of life and purpose.'
'I don't want a family'
'No, Sherin. You do. We all do.  I always admired you. You're a strong lady. Part of this strength is also learning to trust again. I'd be happy to share the rest of my life with you. But please don't feel compelled. I'll give you time to think about it... See you!'

Sherin showed up after a week. She loved her family so much and yearned to have one. She liked Vasu and the kid. Prof Vasu saw his daughter as an angel. David was delighted to finally see his friend happy. Many couples inhabit love, there are only a few couples wherein love wishes to inhabit. Choosing to love again, Vasu and Sherin refused to be defined by their past. They made space for love. As a result they got a girl who would constantly remind them that this life is a marvelous journey. And they need not wander in solitude. Life has given them a beautiful companion. They named her, Sajna.

Birds of Different Feathers

Short story 7:

He never realized that she was the one. Neither did she when they went their separate ways. The alchemy of separation brought their desire for each other out. It turned indifference into inevitable, fondness into passion for one another. But she was confined by doubts and fears. Her desire was caged by bars of faith, creed and community mores. However, his heart suffered from within for this transition that love brought about was excruciating yet celestial. His yearning for her reconfigured the cosmology inside him. He felt like a deserted bird with deep anguish, fluttering in open space. They know they're not birds of the same feather. But they want to fly together. Do they have a sky?

Meant to be

She reminisces the best of times they both had during their journey together. He decided to move on with life without her. It was a mutual decision so she came to the station to send him off, although with a heavy heart. Their recent skirmishes opened up a can of worms that laid bare the fault lines in their relationship. Although, a part of her refuses to end it and make space for the new one. She kept standing in the railway station unable to move forward long after the train had gone. Stuck to the ground, she cursed her life for crippling her soul. She had no tears to shed and no courage to pursue new paths of love and life. And, all of a sudden, she heard a familiar voice, 'Hai, is this Sweta? How have you been? Long time!!' It was Samar her schoolmate from the past. She hid her grief in her smile and replied, 'Good... Where have you been?'. ' Long story!! Are you going home? Can I drop you? he offered. She was hesitant but agreed to go. They had so much to share that their conversation seemed to go on for eternity. The car then drove into the sunset.

Grey Hair

'You've grey hair, why don't you dye your hair?',  'You're growing old! Why don't you find a girl?'
As he batted these comments that are thrown at him as casual remarks, some of it bothered him while he shrugged his shoulders off the rest. He doesn't know whether to blame people or genetics for the attention his grey hair receives. He was obviously pissed that his hair gets more attention than him. Whereas his mother tends to oil his hair whenever he is home and insisted he takes bath with aloe vera for healthy hair. 'Grey hair is a mark of wisdom', his father quips. He stared at his father suspiciously as if he cracked where the deficiency came from. His grand mother although suggested that he eats nutritious food and sleeps on time. While walking back to office next morning, he resolved himself to take on life with moderation. He now feels aware that what he deals with in life is nothing purely black nor white but filled with shades of grey. Proud of this epiphany, everytime people inquire, he throws one-liner at them like his father:
'This grey hair has seen life, bro'
'George Clooney hair style! How's it?'
'Call me a Silver Fox!'

Wrong Number

Short story 4:

'You're too rural for my taste', she recalled her ex-love's last words, it's been six years since she left her town. 'No time for conversations but empty pleasantries can give you access to high profile networks', chuckles as she spoke to a buddy back home.  The city's grandeur is captivating yet  hollowing out; it's monstrosity freaks her as well. She is used to the pretentious peers here, although she misses her candid friends in town. She knows she can't live like this for ever. A call from an unknown number interrupted the deadening silence. 'Hi Meera, this is Karthik....' 'Are you in Delhi?' the familiar voice  sounded strange... 'Wrong number', she hung up...

Prisoner of Love

How're you so close to me!
Even when you're nowhere near?
How're you so dear to me!
Even when you're at a distant?
Spare me your little tricks.
When did you become
the darling of my dreams?
Like a conquered queen,
You're ruling over my heartland.
Are you just a fairytale?

 Won't you end this debacle?
Walk over my fragile faith, else
Heal my injured heart that bleeds
Listen! To the daily whispers of love.
Unable to dismiss you,
How long can I survive?
This love's long sentence!
Question marks are tormenting
Finish it with a full stop.
Give my life it's meaning.

Fearing a downfall, My heart
swings amid hypothesis and hope.
You've held me captive!
Am I the prisoner of love?
All this for trespassing-
In the secret garden of your self?
For stealing a glance
at the beauty of your being?
If Love is a forbidden fruit,
Are we it's Adam and Eve?

Promise of Love

Sweet heart, Oh Love!
The apple of my eye,
When are you taking me
To that blessed land
of togetherness?
Where there is no civilization
That bars us from being as one;
Only You and I, for all times to come.
Where there is no constitution
That intends to sever this tie.
Only You and I and our rainbow dreams!
Where there is no uncivil caste
That unbinds our sacred union;
Only You and I, and the Promise of Love!
Where there is no dogmatic faith
as brave as our companionship;
Only You and I, for all times to come.
Where no cultured body keeps
This desire in the closet of our selves
Only You and I, and our rainbow dreams!
Where there is no strong fate
That could ever set us apart.
Only You and I, and the Promise of Love!

Shadow and Light

As days quietly go by,
Muted thoughts bespeak
A desire deep-seated.
The sweet and sour
Memories of the past
turn my sunshine morning
into shadows of the mortal.
Alas! Grief has no timeline.

As my heart bled to behold
this blooming love rest in peace.
The firmness of my earth cracked.
The calmness of my waters ceased.
The volcanoes of my world erupted.
Had I known the last time I saw you
was the last time I could see you!
Recompose the entire cosmos, I’d.

Would I not have stopped
this earth from spinning?
Would I not have stopped
the clock from ticking?
Would I not have stopped
the fate from twisting?
Who threw their jinx
upon this holy alliance?

Did you leave my love hanging
between despair and hope, my darling?
Did you leave my prayer dangle
over the pendulum of destiny?
When will this unholy mess end?
And when it does, oh dear!
Will you come to see me where
my dark night and your dawn meet?

Topsy-turvy Times: Drunk in Desires

What was yours yesterday
Isn't yours today.
Will what is yours now
still be yours tomorrow?

Sorcery of human life steals
The fantasy of what's yours.
In emptiness, serenity there is;
A primitive sense of peace.

A heart full of desires bring
A life full of passion spring
What you wish for, is you;
So, what are you but longing for?

The things you run after!
Are you worthy of them?
is a question lesser relevant.
Are they worthy of you after all?

Have you had a little talk
with the new Lilly that's bud?
Have you taken a little walk
with the buddy next door?

When is the last time
You danced your spirit out?
When is the last time you
tuned into your soul's hymn?

The masks we are forced to wear,
on the daily stage of life's theater
Had we to remove them, layer by layer
Would we still be proud of what remains?

Yes, time is a little trickster where
Ambitions slowly knits it's trap.
Success is but a sweet dream,
While worry is a slippery slope.

As you step out and catch a breath
Not only is the morning sunshine yours
but the evening twilight has a tale to tell
Abundance of life awaits it's little child.

Oh dear! are you still stuck!!
In the mirage of stocks and bonds?
Who sold you this velvet dream?
It's as trippy as the wine in our hands.

Drunk in desires
Aren't we puppets,
in the hands of the rich?
Such topsy-turvy times!

Autumn of Life

Where can I dissolve the ashes of my love
Won't you take it home with you?
Scatter it all your way; plant a few saplings
May a thousand flowers blossom!

Where can I bury the dreams unfulfilled?
Would you carry it forward with you?
Pass it on to all young ones.
May a thousand minds sparkle!

Where can I hide the wounds of my heart?
Why don't you bury it with me!
Let the pains of my past perish.
May a thousand futures flourish!

Where can I pay back all my debts?
Would you pay it forward for me?
Tell my folks I owed them this.
May a thousand tears bid me farewell!

If Love is a....

If Love is a crime,
Nail me onto a Cross
Won't I resurrect
Only to offer love again.

If Love is a sword
Slash it into my heart
Let me wear it
as a badge of honor.

If Love is a long walk
Give me a friend
How many hills to pass?
before we reach salvation..

If Love is an unknown destiny
Show me the road
That takes me to trust
Trust takes me to truth.

If Love is a tragedy
Give me another one!
I'll bring you peace!- for
disasters are but manmade.

A Sacred Union- A Prayer!

With candid conversations
Never did I imagine
during our embryonic days,
I would fall for this.
Like a conceived mother
Did love sprout in me?
I felt impregnated.

To nurture
This beautiful affection
Is a daily affair;
A day to day devotion.
Like an expecting mother
Ain't I also waiting
for the infant to grow?

Two hearts from
different worlds
fond of each other,
stumble and struggle.
When would the angels
on this earth listen to the
symphony of these souls?

I miss her moon face!
Faded in reality, her face
appears vivid in my dreams.
She's somewhere between
Fact and fiction, to me.
An open book, She's
Although a mystery!

Words she spoke
caused healing wounds.
Scars but remained.
A Loving heart
bears all that.
How so fragile!
yet full of strength!

She's a soulmate,
So a soft spot!- yet
an undying spirit.
The brook of this bond
Suffered separation.
will the parted streams
merge together?

Oh Goddess of love,
My prayer to thee
Is this:
If given a chance,
I want to be her-
Nose ring!
Apart, yet a part.

Wasn't I just a nomadic bee?
Flying around in the garden of lust
Whose sweet nectar did I consume
to Intoxicate myself with love?
Where could I find you?
my foreign flower!
Did you not hear my cries of suffering?

Caged by customs, denied by circumstances
Parted by civilizations, delayed by destiny
Languishing are but the twin hearts.
When love is in the air- what're
barricades and borders for?
Won't mortal beings know?
Fences don't apply to fireflies?

Engulfed in sorrow, she's
Constrained and conflicted.
Oh demons of this world,
Spare my sweetheart!
She's not my temptation
Isn't she but my life's prayer!
A sincere constant meditation.

Prayers,
The Other Half

இல்லை;

               கொண்டு வந்தாய்;

A Story of Despair and Hope

Amidst a world of differences
Between you and me:
I wonder how is this feeling,
a divine wish? as my soul makes it to be?
Or is it just a figment of my imagination?
An illusive dance in my head?
A play of my whims and fancies?
that baffles the beliefs of my existence?
This path is but filled with despair.
But, do you know what gives me hope?

This is a love that refuses to die
The shattered pieces of this heart
Is ready for more, for this is never
About me nor thee
But about itself, I’m afraid
 it would strike you
As it did to me,
one day!

How are we on the same path!
if our destinies are to be different?
How can this be a different fate?
If you and I breathe
 the same Zephyr ?
of everlasting love?
Let thousand storms
Shatter this dream.
Won’t earth stand its ground?
Since this love is the elixir of my life.

If you get to see me
At the tragic end of this story.
Come over to my grave.
I’ll hand you over
The secret potion of this love
For I know it belongs to you.

If you get to see me
In high spirits of my senility
Come over to my home.
Won’t I make you tea?
For we shall reminisce and rejoice
In the warmth of this love
In the winter of our lives.

Until then,
I’ll pass through all dark nights
Like a hermit in a hinterland
Looking for my moonlight
Like a sky on a no-moon day
Yet, my earth doesn’t lose patience
Nor does my sky collapse
I’ll carry you in all my thoughts
In all my tears and dreams….

The Assassination of Love

Standing at the same place
Where we parted ways
Waiting for the person
Who would return never;
Stuck in time, I'm
Stranded in thoughts
In a myriad of memories.
Couldn't but sing an Ode
To the lady Nightingale!
Who walked away with ease
Went she, far a distance
Would she ever listen to
the lyrics of my lamentations?
As the sharpest of swords
Pierces into my heart,
Slower and ever more firmer
Death tastes sweeter.
But like any lesser mortal
Ain't I cursed with a life?
To know and live with the fact
That she is happy without me.
Yet, as time slays down
My tender love dead,
As heart drains off
All hopes harbored.
Looking forward
With weary eyes,
In the dark nights
Of my soul,
The return of my querida!
Flames of this passion
keeps consuming me.
May I still survive?
For who will tell the world
Of this beautiful chapter
In life!

Love is life

If you're a whirlwind
and you love the tree
Don't try to caress;
Keep yourself off.
For you'll hurt it
as you proceed to be.

If you're the wild forest
Can you fall in love
With fire? You can!
But stay put
For it'll burn you
From inside out.

If you're a river
Of passion,
and you stop by
To quench a thirst
Of a passersby.
Resist love, drown alert!

Some love stories end
before they even begin.
Some love stories last
A few shared glances.
Not all lovers share a story,
Not all stories offer love.

Nevertheless, move on.
You're a beautiful part
In their story as much as
Their stories a beautiful part
In yours! March forward
My friend! Love is life.

Like the gentle breeze
That blows your way
Love would one day
Sweep you off your feet.
Hold it together, hard and soft
For love is life, for love is life.

Love,
S

Dark Fiction

Did the moon
 leave the sky
As the sun rises,
and glares the eye
Isn't night just
 a day away?
What took my lady
While I was away?

Hiding under
A veil of ignorance;
Is my longing
A trail of images?
Lightning of sorts;
Don't you hear
my thunderstorms?
Ms butterfly!

The black sky
awaits it's moon.
The stars are not
It's friends.
after the rain,
There is sunshine-but
Where is the warmth?
Ms Melancholy!

Empty nights
And hollow dreams
Heavenly curse?
Or hell's disguise?
As you keep me wait
My unanswered call
This story needs an end
Ms Silence!

Many a moon
Have passed.
Since this sky
Lost its crescent.
Smokescreen
Of clouds all night
Are you light years
Away from my Earth?

You needed your space
You said. Yes, very well!
You're not a show piece
You're not for world to wonder
You're but the empress
Of all evenings!
Do come back, when you feel
The colors of my rainbow!

I'm in the breeze
that passes by.
I'm in the song
You hear across.
Listen to the sky!
Lyrics of my life song
breathe thy name.
Without thee, What am I?
 a dark fiction!
